I got 32K miles on the OEM front tires rotated side to side every 6K miles and had plenty of tread left when I replaced them all around with Michelin XPS Traction tires.

Steel inner aluminum outer is about the only way to go unless you get longer studs or use some kind of wheel spacer. The thicker aluminum wheels are just too much for stock stud length.
